Nursing Home Air Conditioner Shuts Down During Heat Wave

As we reach the brunt of the summer months, the temperatures are reaching an all time high and can become very dangerous for elderly individuals if they aren?t properly protected. In one nursing home, fifty-six residents in a nursing home were forced to evacuate because of a lack of air conditioning.

The inside of the nursing home building that is more than 35-years-old had temperatures so high that it became unfit for the residents who lived there. The residents were taken to other facilities or allowed to stay with family member until the issue with the air conditioning was resolved. The nursing home employee?s tries to keep the residents cool by having activities in the dining room, which is air conditioning and having twenty-four individual air-conditioning units brought in, but state officials still decided to evacuate the building. The Department of Public Health stated that the temperature was not an acceptable range to house all the residents and said that if the problem was fixed the facility would be reevaluated. The nursing home improvements will cost more than $50,000.

High temperatures can affect the elderly?s health in many negative ways. Dehydration, exhaustion can affect the already pre-existing medical problems the elderly already have. It?s important to investigate the building your elderly one is planning to stay at and ask about their plans for maintenance in case of an instance like this one.

Penn State University will remove the famed statue of Joe Paterno outside its football stadium, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.

"The statue of Joe Paterno outside Beaver Stadium has become a lightning rod of controversy and national debate, including the role of big time sports in university life,"?Penn State President Rodney Erickson said in a letter explaining the decision.?"I now believe that, contrary to its original intention, coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our University and beyond."

Construction vehicles and police arrived shortly after dawn Sunday, barricading the street and sidewalks near the statue, erecting a chain-link fence then concealing the statue with a blue tarp.


The statue, nearly seven feet tall and weighing more than 900 pounds, was built in 2001 in honor of Paterno's record-setting 324th Division 1 coaching victory and his "contributions to the university."?

The university said it would take down the larger-than-life monument in the face of an investigative report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found the late coach, along with three top Penn State administrators, concealed the abuse claims against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago in order to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity.

Target for critics
The bronze sculpture outside Beaver Stadium has been a rallying point for students and alumni outraged over Paterno's firing four days after Sandusky's Nov. 5 arrest -- and grief-stricken over the Hall of Fame coach's Jan. 22 death at age 85.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to Michael McCann, Legal Analyst and Columnist at Sports Illustrated, about the deal Joe Paterno worked about with Penn State prior to his departure from the University.

But it turned into a target for critics after the Freeh report's stunning allegation of a cover-up by Paterno, ousted President Graham Spanier and two Penn State officials, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz. Their failure to report Sandusky to child-welfare authorities in 2001 allowed him to continue molesting boys, the report found.

Erickson admitted that the school had made mistakes in its handling of the affair, and said the university had become more aware of the issues of child abuse as a result of the scandal that engulfed the school.?

"With the release of Judge Freeh's Report of the Special Investigative Counsel, we as a community have had to confront a failure of leadership at many levels," his letter said. "I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse."

Paterno's family, along with attorneys for Spanier, Curley and Schultz, vehemently deny any suggestion they protected a pedophile. Curley and Schultz await trial on charges of failing to report child abuse and lying to a grand jury but maintain their innocence. Spanier hasn't been charged. Sandusky was convicted last month of 45 counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys.

NBC's Bob Costas says Joe Paterno's reputation can never fully recover from the Penn State sexual abuse scandal, and now the NCAA plans to step up their investigation.

Some newspaper columnists and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden have said the statue should be taken down, while a small plane pulled a banner over State College reading, "Take the statue down or we will."

But Paterno still has plenty of fans, and Penn State's decision to remove the monument won't sit well with them. One student even vowed to "chain myself to that statue" if there was an attempt to remove it.

Three men claim abuse by Sandusky in '70s or '80s

University officials had called the issue a sensitive one in light of Paterno's enormous contributions to the school over a 61-year coaching career. The Paterno family is well-known in the community for philanthropic efforts, including the millions of dollars they've donated to the university to help build a library and fund endowments and scholarships.

Soup can be prepared by allowing the cabbage to be half cooked for about 10-12 minutes (still a bit crisp on the outside) and adding salt and pepper to the preparation. One can have as much soup or juice in a day. However, it is best had with each meal.

The cabbage diet is one of many fad diets which revolved around a particular food. The grapefruit diet is another common example. The premise of the diet claims you can achieve significant weight loss by consuming unlimited amounts of cabbage soup with select foods for seven days. In many ways, it is not unlike a fasting type of diet. Any dietary restriction will bring about weight loss, especially when accompanied by exercise. However, restricting your diet to one type of food will likely lead to diet boredom and poor nutritional intake.

Cabbage Soup Preparation

* Chop the green onions. Place the sliced onions in a saucepan and saut? the onions adding a little bit of cooking oil spray.
* Take out the seeds and membrane of the green peppers. Chop the green peppers into small bite sized cube, throw them in to the saucepan together with the saut?ed onions.
* Peel and cut the cabbage leaves into pieces roughly the same size as the peppers, add them to continue sauteing.
* Wash and clean the carrots. Chop them before adding to the saucepan.
* Cut the mushrooms in halves or thirds before throwing them in to the saucepan.
* Add cayenne pepper or a little bit of curry powder to the brew to give it a little kick. That is, if you want you soup to be a little spicy.
* The bullion cubes can be used to add flavor to the dish. If you do choose to add this to your cooking, it eliminates the need for additional salt.
* Add about 12 cups of water into the pot. Lower the heat and let the soup simmer. A two hour period is recommended to make the soup most effective. Add additional salt and pepper for taste.

Bible Truths to Conquer the Fear of Death | The Waterbrook

Don?t be afraid of death or dying. (You can conquer the fear of death and dying.)

?No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared
for those who love him??but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).

Do you fear death or dying? Or do you worry about end of life issues?

Many people, including Christians, are afraid of death or afraid of dying. In fact many people are consumed by the fear of death and dying. Or they are afraid of suffering as they die.

Other common fears people have are that they will be a burden to others in their last years, or that their spouse or children who are left behind will suffer.

If you too worry about or fear dying, take some time to read and meditate on the passages in this Bible study. Pray as you read, asking God to remove your death fears and help you see things through his eyes. God does not want you to be afraid of death or afraid of dying.

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ?Death has been swallowed up in victory.? ?Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?? (1 Corinthians 15:54-55).

Be reconciled with God to overcome the fear of death or dying.

Jesus came to reconcile us with God, free us from the fear of death and dying and give us the assurance of eternal life with him. How can we be reconciled with God? Jesus said, ?You must be born again? (John 3:7) and added, ?I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me? (John 14:6).

If you confess with your mouth, ?Jesus is Lord,? and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved (Romans 10:9-10).

God created you and he loves you more than you can imagine.
If you have not yet done so, surrender your life to Christ by saying the following as a prayer: ?Dear Lord, I confess that I am a sinner. Please forgive my sins and accept me as your child. I invite you to be my Savior and the Lord of my life. I surrender myself to you in the name of Jesus Christ.?

If you prayed with sincerity, Christ accepted you into his Kingdom. You are now a Christian and all the promises of heaven are yours. Welcome to the family of God!

There?s no need to be afraid of death, for we will be with Jesus.

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection (Romans 6:5).

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14).

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Jesus came to set us free from the fear of death and dying.

Jesus came to set us free. We do not need to be afraid of death or afraid of dying. There is no more need to fear the end of your life.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death?that is, the devil?and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death (Hebrews 2:14-15).

Jesus said to her, ?I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?? (John 11:25-26).

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints (Psalm 116:15).

It will be unimaginably wonderful in heaven. (Death is not the end of life!)

Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day?and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing (2 Timothy 4:8).

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).

There will be no sorrow or tears in heaven.

He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The LORD has spoken (Isaiah 25:8).

For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes (Revelation 7:17).

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Revelation 21:4).

God sometimes takes the righteous away to be spared from evil.

The righteous perish, and no one ponders it in his heart; devout men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death (Isaiah 57:1-2).

Do not fear dying, or suffering before you die.

?God will not give you more than you can handle.? This common saying (which many people incorrectly think is in the Bible) doesn?t mean God causes all your problems! It is simply a way to say that he will be with you, walk with you, and strengthen you no matter what you go through. He will help you overcome the fear of death and and the fear of dying.

Note: The phrase that ?God will not give you more than you can handle? comes from the following verse (which has a somewhat different meaning): ?No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it? (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Look at the confidence Paul, Peter, and John had when considering the suffering Christians might have to experience.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed (Romans 8:18-19).

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade?kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God?s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials (1 Peter 1:3-6).

They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death (Revelation 12:11).

Don?t fear that you will be a burden to others.

One reason people sometimes have a fear of death is that they worry about being a burden to others. That?s a normal fear. But the Bible says we are all connected to one another (Romans 12:4-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27). God expects us to care for one another. Although it sometimes can be a burden, caring for others also can be a blessing, for it is as we give of ourselves that we become more like Christ.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).

Don?t fear for those you will leave behind.

If you die before your spouse, children, parents or other significant people in your life, they likely will miss you greatly. If you die when your spouse or children still are living with you, they will miss your love, support and care. Yet God loves them much more than you do. Be sure to write a will and provide as best you can for the future, and then put yourself and your family in God?s hands. Don?t be afraid of death or dying for their sake. If you die first, God will still be with them! Remember, he loves them much more than you do!

But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless (Psalm 10:14).

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling (Psalm 68:5).

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable?if anything is excellent or praiseworthy?think about such things (Philippians 4:6-8).

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7)

Overcome the fear of death. Look forward to being with Jesus!

It?s normal to have a fear of fear or fear of dying. One way to overcome being afraid of death or dying is to think about spending eternity with Jesus.

Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:23).

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling (2 Corinthians 5:1-2).

For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life (2 Corinthians 5:4).

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20).

But . . . Don?t passively wait for the end of life. You have a purpose!

Let the verses in this study help you overcome being afraid of death or afraid of dying. But don?t stop there. God wants you to make a difference while you are here on earth. He wants you to touch the world for Christ. Meditate on the verses on this page, overcome your fear of death, and then make a difference for Christ!

For we are God?s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith (Philippians 1:21-25).

If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:8).

Rest secure in God?s love for you. Don?t be afraid of death or dying.

Sony Xperia GX strolls into the FCC, shows off its pentaband 3G radios

 

Sony Xperia GX

Back when Sony announced the Xperia GX and Xperia SX there was no mention of any launch outside of the company's native Japan. The manufacturer was quick to highlight the fact that these devices designed specifically for the Japanese market and that they had no news to share at the time about any international launch plans. That said though, the Xperia GX  has now popped up at the FCC and is noted as having a pentaband 3G radio onboard to go along with Android 4.0, a 4.6-inch 720p Sony Reality display and a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. In other words, a Sony device a lot of folks might actually be interested in if it was made readily available outside of Japan.

A non-US device making its way through the FCC isn't necessarily news, as even foreign phones need approval of they're to be used by visitors to the U.S. But the different radio frequencies (and lack of LTE) makes this Xperia GX a tantalizing proposition, and something we might eventually see released internationally. We'll be watching for any developments at IFA, where we're expecting a few bug phone-related announcements from Sony Mobile.
