Forget festivities and highlights, Florida State had the best Midnight Madness weekend in the country. The Seminoles picked up a commitment from No. 27-ranked Xavier Rathan-Mayes on Saturday night, and then followed it up on Sunday with another key pledge.
Jarquez Smith, a 6-foot-9 forward from Jones County (Ga.), is off the board to Florida State, he told CBSSports.com. Smith visited the Tallahassee campus this weekend.
"The reason I liked them was the coaches, the academics, the atmosphere and the players," Smith said. "Coach [Leonard] Hamilton wants me beacuse I can help score, bring energy and block shots."
Smith is a talented stretch forward who has a high ceiling because of his ability to create matchup problems. He knocks down shots from the perimeter and is also a solid defender and shot-blocker due to his length. Smith needs to utilize his athleticism more effectively around the rim, and also become more aggressive ? but the talent is there.
Smith, ranked No. 63 in the CBSSports.com top 100, took a trip to Georgia last month. Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and others were also involved at some point in his recruitment.
With the additions of Rathan-Mayes and Smith, Florida State immediately boosts its offense for next fall. Rathan-Mayes is a knockdown shooter who can heat up in a hurry, while Smith will add a new element to the Seminoles once he gets acclimated in Tallahassee. With eight first-year players on this year's roster, Leonard Hamilton will have a solid core for the next couple years.
