Q&A: Key answers about listeria in fruit

Some questions consumers may have about listeria in cantaloupes.

Q: What is listeria?

A: Listeria is a hardy bacteria found in soil and water that can be carried by animals. It is often found in processed meats because it can contaminate a processing facility and stay there for a long period of time. It is also common in unpasteurized cheeses and unpasteurized milk. It is less common in produce like cantaloupe, but there have been a couple of other listeria outbreaks in fruits and vegetables in recent years. When a person contracts the disease, it can cause fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms and even death. One in five people who have listeria can die.

Q: Am I at risk?

A: Listeria generally only affects the elderly, people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women and newborns whose mothers were infected before birth. The median age of victims in this outbreak is 78 years old. Healthy, younger adults and most children can usually consume listeria with no ill effects or mild illness.

Q: So can I eat cantaloupe?

A: You should avoid cantaloupe from Jensen Farms, the Colorado grower that distributed the tainted fruit.

Q: How do I know if I have a cantaloupe from Jensen Farms?

A: The recalled cantaloupe may be labeled "Colorado Grown," ''Distributed by Frontera Produce," ''Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." It may also be labeled "USA." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the Food and Drug Administration said, so it may be hard to tell. Neither the government nor Jensen Farms has released a list of retailers who sold the fruit, so health officials advise consumers ask retailers about the origin of their cantaloupe.

Q: I think I may have had one of the contaminated cantaloupes in my home. But I'm not sure. What should I do?

A: The government's motto is "when in doubt, throw it out." And if you think you had tainted fruit in your home, clean and sanitize all surfaces it may have touched.

Q: I scrub all of my fruits and vegetables before I eat them. So I am okay, right?

A: Scrubbing is never a bad idea, but it may not rid produce of all contaminants, especially on cantaloupe which has a thick, rough skin with a lot of places for pathogens to hide. Health officials think people may have been sickened when people cut into their cantaloupes, bringing listeria on the outside of the fruit to the inside. If you think you may have a tainted cantaloupe in your house, the best recourse is to throw it out.

Q: It looks like the cantaloupes weren't even shipped to my state. Should I still be concerned?

A: The FDA said Jensen Farms shipped to 25 states, but it may have been resold in other states. Illnesses have been discovered in several states where cantaloupes weren't shipped, including in Maryland where a person died.

Q: Why have there been so many deaths?

A: Listeria is less well-known than other pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, which cause many more illnesses in tainted food every year. But listeria is more deadly. One in five people who contract it can die.

Q: When is this outbreak going to be over?

A: FDA and CDC officials said Wednesday that they expect the number of illnesses and even deaths to rise through October. Listeria has an incubation period of a month or more, so people who ate contaminated fruit last week may not see illnesses until next month.

Jaime Ibarra: ?I was originally built in Spain, but I grew up in Australia: it?s complicated, but it explains the funny accent.
I bought my first SLR camera at the end of 2004? a 6.1MP Canon 300D, which came with a rather shoddy 17-55mm kit lens with a wonky, almost unusable manual-focus ring. I opted to learn in my own (some would say ?stubborn?? I say ?exploratory?) way, defined by my unwillingness to read the instruction manual. Just? pick it up and learn as-I-go. I did not read any books. I did not take any classes. I did not compare myself to other photographers. I did not want to learn the ?rules?, because I feel rules can imprison me, creatively. I made a lot of mistakes. But I learned? rather a lot. Within that first year of attempting photography, over a dozen images of mine were published?and I haven?t been the same, since.
As it turns out, I?m pretty good at it.
I am now a Professional Portrait & Art Photographer, but I am also known to do Editorial, Fashion, Commercial and Advertising work.
My work is widely published here on Earth, as well as?well, that?s the only planet I am aware of, so far. There?s still time yet, though.
My ?style? is the visual amalgamation of over 15 years in Graphic Design, 25 years of composing & performing music, many years spent traveling around the planet, a lifetime of over-romanticizing things, insomnia, an inexplicable ability to hear what colours would sound like if they could sing (Synaesthesia, anyone?), an unfaltering fascination with humans, and an obsessive need to create.?

Kindle Fire: Amazon tablet unveiled

Kindle Fire: Amazon's much-anticipated tablet device ? the $199 Kindle Fire ? will be a formidable competitor in the tablet wars.

In a head-on challenge to Apple?s iPad, Amazon?s Jeff Bezos launched a $199 tablet, along with a bevy of other products, in a hotly anticipated Wednesday morning press conference in New York.

The Kindle Fire is poised to be a formidable competitor in the sizzling hot tablet wars. Compared to the iPad, which starts at $499, this device sells for less than half the price of the cheapest iPads.

The 14.6-ounce Fire is a transformed version of the Kindle e-book reader: It has a 7-inch color touchscreen, runs on Google?s Android operating system, has a dual core processor, offers Wi-Fi connectivity (but no 3G). It also lacks a camera, microphone, GPS, and comes with only 8 GB of storage.

But that?s not the point. The Kindle Fire isn?t about the hardware, or about computing. With a $15 billion media business, Amazon is a media giant and its goal isn?t to sell hardware, but to sell the media that will run on its devices. ?It?s not just books,? Amazon CEO Bezos told Wired. ?It?s music, games, software, it?s a bunch of different things.?

The device may be the star now, but the focus is really on selling Amazon products. ?The big draw of the Kindle Fire is easy access to content bought through Amazon,? writes NPR?s Linda Holmes in a blog on the Fire launch. ?Whether books, music, or video. There are certainly other ways to get content onto the Fire, but Amazon's own offerings will have a lot to do with the device's appeal.?

The Fire is available Nov. 15.

Though the Fire was the star player in Wednesday?s press conference, Bezos also introduced two new e-readers. The Kindle Touch uses the same pearl e-ink as the previous Kindle, but it has a touch screen so users can swipe a finger to turn the page or type on an on-screen keyboard. ?This is the top of the line Kindle,? Bezos said in the press conference. The Touch is $149 with Amazon Whispernet mobile connectivity and $99 for the Wi-Fi only version.

Bezos also unveiled a slimmer, lighter version of the ad-supported Kindle e-reader (a traditional one, in which side buttons are used to turn pages). Because there?s no physical keyboard, it?s under six ounces. Even better? It?s only $79. ?At $79, it?s really going to blow people away,? Bezos told Wired Magazine last week in a sneak preview. ??These are premium products at non-premium prices.?

Both Kindle e-readers can be pre-ordered today and ship Nov. 21.

Amazon also announced its own web browser Wednesday, Amazon Silk. ?Silk is a web browser designed with cloud computing in mind,? writes PC World. ?The idea behind that is to offload intelligent behavior prediction and page loading work to Amazon's Web services, so the heavy lifting is done there and not on the tablet's browser.?

The Kindle e-readers are a favorite of many book readers, but the Kindle Fire represents a stunningly aggressive foray into the tablet wars by Amazon. Most tech and media watchers, including the Monitor, expected the tablet to launch at $250. The aggressively-priced $199 Fire will shake up the tablet wars and challenge ? but not necessarily unseat ? Apple?s dominance in the industry.

Fantastic resources for mums to be | home and family blogs

Once your pregnancy has been confirmed by a doctor and even with those early signs of pregnancy, you will want to start researching everything you need to know about becoming a mum. In fact right from your first pregnancy test and going online to look at a due date calculator, you will have been thinking about and possibly asking, lots of questions. During your pregnancy this is a great time to get as many answers as you can, obviously a whole many more questions will arise once the baby is born and grows up. Knowing the places you can go to get answers is the first step.

Many of us when we first fall pregnant have questions that we prefer to seek answers for anonymously or feel they are too trivial to go to medical professionals about. That's where online baby sites can be extremely useful.
They will continue to be useful throughout pregnancy and parenthood so it's worth bookmarking them for future reference. Or even making one your home page. These sites can send you weekly reminders about your baby's development from week one of pregnancy right through childhood. They can also help with a due date calculator or information on the early signs of pregnancy.

The internet is a great place for new mums as it has made it much easier to find other parents experiencing the same thing as you. You can post almost any question into a forum and someone will probably respond who has been through the same thing and has all the answers. Blogs too can give answers to questions you hadn't even yet thought of. Other people's experiences often mirror your own and as a result forums and blogs can be an invaluable resource to new mums.

The NHS is the best place to go for medical advice. With many services including NHS Online and NHS Direct to Walk in Centres, GP's and A&E. NHS Direct has been phenomenally successful and is a great service for new mums who have concerns but are not sure if it warrants a hospital or a doctor's visit. The NHS symptom checker is a great feature on the NHS website and can help you come to a decision about where your next port of call is.

Whatever you are going through throughout pregnancy and motherhood, remember your mother or perhaps aunt or older sister all went through it too. A condition such as varicose veins, perineal tears or mastitis may seem an alien problem to you and therefore you may forget that someone else in your family is bound to have suffered the same. You will be surprised at how much knowledge other women have. If you have an informal question or something you are not comfortable discussing with a doctor, have a word with your mum.. She may have just the answer.

When your baby is born you will be advised to attend a local baby weigh in clinic as often as you wish. Once you are there you are free to ask any questions regarding yourself or your baby that you may have. It can be a good idea to jot something down ahead of the clinic to ask the health visitor when you arrive.

Baby and toddler groups or groups' created for first time parents are a brilliant source of support and company for new mums. It can be really useful to meet other babies the same age as your own. The leaders at these groups are usually mums or nursery nurses themselves so can be great at answering informal questions.

During the rollercoaster ride of pregnancy you will have spent time thinking about baby names and consulting a due date calculator, but you will also have tonnes of questions. The questions don't end at birth and first time mums will find themselves online late at night trying to find yet more answers. With great websites, forums, clinics and local groups there is a huge wealth of places to turn to for the many questions and surprises parenthood can bring up.

ZetaDisplay contributes to increasing sales of food and drink at ...

Some time ago ZetaDisplay entered into an agreement to install its Digital Signage media platform at four independent Shell petrol stations in Norway. This collaboration covers software, digital systems, operation and media production. ZetaDisplay has installed digital displays, along with menu panels and campaign advertising inside the petrol stations, and also digital displays outdoors, which communicate with customers while they are filling up and servicing their vehicles.

Shell has a network of over 500 petrol stations throughout Norway. Some of these stations are franchised by Shell, and others by independent licensees. Hans Petter Hotvedt is an independent licensee who has four Shell petrol stations, in each of which ZetaDisplay has installed media platforms for Digital Signage.

?I get a better response to my marketing with the aid of the digital displays.

I begin to communicate with my customers while they are filling up with petrol, and then follow up with offers inside the shop. Thanks to ZetaDisplay?s media platform the turnover of food and drink has increased in our petrol stations. This development is very positive and is a direct result of the display solutions that have been installed both indoors and outdoors. Particularly important are the outdoor displays, which provide a completely new possibility to influence those who refuel and pay by card. I am of course very satisfied by the results, and shall in the future gradually increase my investment in Digital Signage,? says Hans Petter Hotvedt, owner of the four Shell petrol stations.

ZetaDisplay is in an expansive phase and has positioned itself in the market by being able to show markedly increased sales for its clients by means of the company?s media platform for Digital Signage.

?This underlines the importance of obtaining early communication with customers who are on their way towards the shop, in the parking area or nearby, before they enter the shop. Powerful brands such as Coca Cola also experience excellent results from this type of marketing. An important factor for us is that the company often wants to build on its brand name in the same way as in all markets, and this suits ZetaDisplay in its position as a Nordic total supplier. ZetaDisplay also sees a development into a direction towards an increasing number of central Nordic co-operation agreements,? says Leif Liljebrunn, CEO of ZetaDisplay AB (publ.).

ZetaDisplay is a leading supplier of Digital Signage within retailing and in public environments in the Nordic market. ZetaDisplay has about 40 employees and has continued in recent years to grow in Sweden, while having subsidiaries in Denmark, Norway and Finland.

About ZetaDisplay

ZetaDisplay is a leading supplier of Digital Signage to major chains in the retailing and service sectors of the Nordic market. The company has close links with research in this area and had demonstrated markedly increased retail sales with more satisfied customers. The company had a turnover of MSEK 50 in 2010 and is presently in an expansive phase.

ZetaDisplay offers complete media platforms for Digital Signage which include software, services and digital systems. The company?s media platforms enable clients to easily produce offers and ensure that a great deal of communication is presented on the right displays at the right time. Each media platform is operated and monitored centrally by the company. The distribution of media and playlists to the displays in stores and service centres is based on the Internet. Control and supervision of the communication is managed by both the company and its clients by means of a web-based interface that is accessed in the cloud via the Internet. The company undertakes media production and provides template tools which allow clients to create the content themselves. The complete solutions also include analyses, advice and project management, along with handling the installation of digital displays and communication equipment at each client site.

Media platforms supplied by the company are used in several sectors, including construction, electronics, sport, clothing and convenience stores, along with banks, restaurants and other service areas. Examples of clients include ICA, Euromaster, Alko, Volkswagen, Shell, KotiPizza, Carlsberg, Team Sportia, SJ, Panasonic and Bilia.

ZetaDisplay has just under 40 employees. The head office is in Malm? and there are subsidiaries located in Denmark, Norway and Finland. From April 4 2011 onwards the company?s shares will be traded on NASDAQ OMX First North Premier using the shortname ZETA.

'Dancing With The Stars': Nancy Grace's Mishap, Ricki Lake's Success

Plus: Rob Kardashian steps it up in week two.
By Kelley L. Carter

Talk-show hosts made the biggest headlines on Monday night's "Dancing With the Stars," with Ricki Lake earning the highest marks and Nancy Grace suffering a near-wardrobe malfunction.

Here's how it all played out:

Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
The soccer goalie kicked off the competition with the jive, giving the judges exactly what they wanted. It was a fitting opening from Solo, who set the tone for what was to come from other contestants. Hard-to-please head judge Len Goodman said, "It was quick! It was sharp. Unfortunately, you lost your timing a little bit here and there. There wasn't quite the synchronicity. However, having said that, first out, first class." 19/30

Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas
In their quickstep, Cavallari was aiming to do a Hollywood-glam interpretation of the dance. Dressed in a sexy, long white gown, à la Marilyn Monroe, the judges said the reality-TV star nailed it. Goodman made a few notes but said he thought it was a great improvement from her first week out. His fellow judges concurred. "I've been bedazzled by the blond bombshell! I love old, Hollywood glamor! This performance was twinkling with pleasure," Bruno Tonioli gushed. Carrie Ann Inaba said: "Last week nervous; this week stunning! You kept your hold, you kept your frame. I thought it was gorgeous!" 22/30

David Arquette and Kym Johnson
The judges appreciated the enthusiasm Arquette offered in his routine this week, saying he followed directions by not holding back. Other than that, they think his routine needs work, saying he lost a lot of technique. Still, he was complimented for gaining confidence. "Carson has some competition! That was Carson-esque! What I love about it is the incredible enthusiasm that came out of you," Inaba said, comparing Arquette to fellow contestant Carson Kressley. "You let it all hang out on the dance floor. I think this is the direction for you to stay in." 18/30

Elisabetta Canalis and Val Chmerkovskiy
The Italian actress and host, who is partnered with newcomer and Maksim's brother Val, impressed the judges with a big improvement from last week. That said, there's work to do. "I'm not going to say much. I'm just going to say this: It's not great, but it was better than last week," Goodman said. "The gears were grinding, the engines were hot. The pistols were pumping. Keep working," Tonioli said. 21/30

Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke
The two danced the jive, and Kardashian looked every bit the surfer dude, dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and his hair done up in a pompadour. The judges said it was a proper performance, and Burke declared that Kardashian is a better dancer than his sister Kim, who was a contestant on another season. "You have the dancing gene and it is coming out!" Burke yelled out. Said Tonioli: "You started to blossom. You're starting to find your own voice. You're having a good time. Your timing was excellent. But I'm telling you, great, great job." 21/30

Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya
Judges said the worst dancers on the show were the most fun to watch, which is the blessing and the curse of this performance. They acknowledged that there was a lot of work put into the routine, but there is much more technical work to be done. "I saw improvement, yet I'm not sure what happened to that improvement in the dance. You were a little wobbly. It had good intent. So that was a little disconcerting. But great enthusiasm," Inaba said. 18/30

Ricki Lake and Derek Hough
Lake and Hough hit the stage dancing to Outkast's "Hey Ya," and Goodman said there were a couple of steps that disturbed them a bit. "I liked the fun. I liked the exuberance. There was a lot of under-the-arm passes. But it was an improvement on last week," Goodman said. His fellow judges didn't exactly agree. Tonioli liked her kicks, and Inaba called it the "best jive of the night so far!" 23/30

Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer
After last week's much-anticipated performance, Bono wanted to up the ante with the quickstep, a difficult routine considering that Bono was nursing a bum knee. In the rehearsal segments, he complained that he had old, creaky knees and said his doctor gave him something to help with his joints. They ended up taking out some of the flashier bits of their routine because of his injuries. Goodman said it was too slow and needed more attack. Everyone else was in agreement. "I could actually see you in pain, but that's part of what goes with the territory on this show. Unfortunately, you're not going to get a great score tonight," Inaba warned. 17/30

Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani
The two danced the jive, and the judges thought it was good but lacked exuberance. "I really enjoy watching you dance. It's genuinely pretty. But I will say, I kind of felt like you played it a little safe. After what we saw last week, I said 'she's going to come out and kill this jive,' " Inaba said. 21/30

Nancy Grace and Tristan McManus
The TV host and prosecutor had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction at the end of her routine, but the TV cameras didn't catch it, instead focusing on the reaction of the audience. "On the European version, that would be perfectly fine," host Tom Bergeron joked. Goodman loved her routine, saying, "How refreshing! Let me tell you: Every quickstep has broken the moves of the dance. You did that. I know what people are saying. They're going to say, 'Where's the flash? Where was the razzamatazz?' I don't care. It was a proper quickstep," Goodman said, who gave her an 8. 21/30

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff
The last couple to take the stage danced the jive and upped the ante from last week's impressive Viennese waltz. The war hero scored high praise from the judges, who said he was born to dance. "You have a feel for the music that comes from within you. The most satisfying overall performance of the night," Tonioli said. 22/30

Abbas declares 'Palestinian Spring' (Politico)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? Thousands of Palestinians cheering and waving flags gave President Mahmoud Abbas a hero?s welcome in the West Bank Sunday, as he told them triumphantly a ?Palestinian Spring? had been born following his historic speech to the United Nations last week.

Abbas? popularity has skyrocketed since he asked the U.N. on Friday to recognize Palestinian independence, defying appeals from Israel and the United States to return to peace talks. His request has pushed the region into uncharted waters, and left the international community scrambling over how to respond.

Thousands of people crowded Abbas? West Bank headquarters in the city of Ramallah to get a glimpse of the 76-year-old president upon his return from New York. Abbas was uncharacteristically animated, shaking his hands and waving to the audience.

Abbas compared his campaign to the ?Arab Spring,? the mass demonstrations sweeping the Arab world in hopes of freedom, saying that an independent Palestinian state is inevitable.

?We have told the world that there is the Arab Spring, but the Palestinian Spring is here,? he said. ?A popular spring, a populist spring, a spring of peaceful struggle that will reach its goal.?

He warned that the Palestinians face a ?long path? ahead. ?There are those who would put out obstacles ? but with your presence they will fall and we will reach our end.?

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel from Jordan and Egypt in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel says it?s ready for peace talks, but has rejected Palestinian calls to freeze construction of Jewish settlements in lands claimed by the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also rejected Palestinian demands that the borders between Israel and a future Palestine be based on the 1967 pre-war lines.

Abbas last week asked the U.N. Security Council to grant the Palestinians full U.N. membership. The Security Council is expected to study the request for several weeks before making a decision, though the U.S. - Israel?s closest ally - has promised to veto the request if it proceeds.

As an alternative, the Palestinians say they will seek lesser observer status in the General Assembly - short of full statehood but a position that would allow them to join international bodies where they could push their agenda against Israel.

The United States, like Israel, says it is committed to Palestinian independence, but that direct negotiations, not a U.N. vote, is the only way to resolve the conflict.

A U.N. recognition will not change the situation on the ground, or resolve key issues like the fate of Palestinian refugees or the dueling claims to Jerusalem. But the Palestinians believe an international endorsement will boost their negotiating position should talks resume.

The international Quartet of Mideast mediators - the U.S., EU, Russia and U.N. - last week issued a statement calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

Abbas has signaled he will reject the Quartet?s plan, while Israel has hinted it accepts it.

No Child Left Behind: with waivers, Obama offers states flexibility (The Christian Science Monitor)

President Obama today unveiled a sweeping plan to give states the flexibility they have been clamoring for under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) education law.

?The goals behind No Child Left Behind were admirable ... but experience has taught us that in its implementation, [it] had some serious flaws that are hurting our children,? the president said in a White House speech, flanked by students, principals, state education leaders, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Teachers feel pressured to narrow the curriculum and teach to the test, and some states have lowered their standards to avoid penalties under the law, Mr. Obama noted.

?Congress has not been able to fix these flaws so far ... So I will,? he said. ?If we?re serious about building an economy that lasts ... we?ve got to get serious about education.?

Obama touted the plan as a way to unleash energy to improve schools at the local level.

Under the waiver plan, states would be freed from some parts of the law in order to pursue their own plans for school improvements and accountability, if they meet certain requirements of the Department of Education.

States that are granted waivers won?t get a reprieve from accountability, he said, but flexibility in exchange for higher standards.

The president?s speech comes as the school year gets under way with no good prospects for a full reauthorization of the law, which has been overdue in Congress since 2007.

This summer, some states were even in open revolt when it came to No Child Left Behind?s requirements that they raise the percentage of students achieving reading and math proficiency ? and devote extra resources to schools that missed the mark.

Secretary Duncan put states on notice this summer that relief was on the way. The waiver plan has sparked pushback from some lawmakers who say it gives Duncan too much authority and undermines some bills that have been introduced in an attempt to fix some aspects of the law.

But the plan has won praise even from some groups that have been pushing hard for a full rewrite of No Child Left Behind.

?It correctly balances federal and state responsibility ... It says, we expect learning in exchange for federal dollars, but the systems of supports, interventions, sanctions, all of that is left up to the states. That is what is most hopeful,? says Amy Wilkins, a vice president at Education Trust in Washington, D.C., which advocates for closing achievement gaps.

The only question going forward, she adds, is ?will the states really develop powerful plans.?

Duncan has noted that some states are already leading the way on raising student-achievement standards to reflect what???s needed to go on to college or a career, holding schools accountable for student gains, and improving teacher effectiveness ??? the three areas where the Department of Education is requiring a commitment in exchange for relief from the law.

Education officials from more than 40 states gave their input to the Department of Education on the waiver plan.

States will be able to apply during this school year for waivers of specific aspects of the law.

One aspect is the original 2014 deadline for schools to achieve 100 percent reading and math proficiency among their students. Instead, a state would have to establish ambitious but achievable goals and support improvement efforts for all schools and all students, according to background provided by White House and Education officials.

States would also have to adopt standards deemed ?college and career ready,? which so far 44 states have done by signing onto what?s known as the Common Core State Standards initiative.

The annual proficiency increases to move toward the 2014 goal have been a major sticking point for states recently, as more and more schools fail to reach the targets.

This summer, for instance, Montana Superintendent Denise Juneau said her state simply didn?t have the resources to intervene in the 155 additional schools that would have required state attention under the higher proficiency bar the state was supposed to set. She reached a compromise with the Department of Education in August by raising the bar 1.4 percent in reading and 2 percent in math, which affected just 16 additional schools.

Another area of flexibility under the waivers is how to measure which schools need improvement. Currently the law requires a series of steps if schools or subgroups of students within them continue to fall short of annual goals. Now, states with waivers will be able to identify the lowest-performing schools (generally the bottom 5 percent) and focus intense intervention efforts there.

Additional supports are to be offered to another 10 percent of schools with high achievement gaps, low graduation rates, or particularly low performance among a subgroup of students, such as a racial group, students with disabilities, or English-language learners.

The final area states will have to commit to is improving teacher and principal effectiveness. With input from teachers and principals, they are to develop guidelines for improved evaluations that include a range of measures ? one of which must be student progress over time.

There?s widespread agreement that teacher evaluation systems need fixing, but just how to do that has been a matter of great debate.

?Evaluation needs to be more teaching-focused, not more testing-focused,? said Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, a national union, in a written statement, which praises some aspects of the waiver plan but criticizes the evaluation requirement.

When states received federal stimulus money for education, they agreed to set up systems by January 2012 that would enable student achievement scores over time to be linked to their teachers, an Education Department Official says. Some states have recently passed laws to require such scores to be part of teacher evaluations, and others should have the data systems in place to plan to do so in the next few years.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee set up by the Department of Education.

If states are granted waivers, local districts will be able to use money more flexibly that was previously set aside to give students in low-performing schools tutoring or a choice to attend other schools. That would apply to about 20 percent of the Title I grants (for schools with low-income students), amounting to about $1 billion nationwide, Education Department officials estimate.

The National School Boards Association praises that shift as a way to help districts ?support school improvement strategies that can more effectively address local conditions.?

The chairman of the House committee overseeing education, Rep. John Kline (R) of Minnesota, criticized the plan as yet another layer of burdensome requirements on states. ?Rather than force states to adopt policies that reflect the priorities of Washington bureaucrats, House Republicans are working to give more control to the state and local education officials who best understand the unique needs of their students,? he said in a written statement Friday.

At the Republican debate on Thursday, presidential candidates were nearly unanimous in their criticism of No Child Left Behind and the sentiment that the federal government should leave education matters to the states.

American Gaming Association Now Supports Online Poker Legislation

Online poker sure has a bright future as more and more organizations start to push for its legalization in the US. Although the American Gaming Association remained neutral in the fray on whether online poker should be legalized or not, but now has released a video about the code of conduct they want to propose the online poker rooms should follow. These set of rules were developed to identify and brand the safe and secure poker sites and safeguard the US citizens when it comes to online poker.

What the AGA is Aiming For

Well, the American Gaming Association proposes six principles in making the online world of poker safe for the US players. One of them is to conduct background checks on all people who want to take part in the industry of online poker. This is to make sure that any criminals or persons who have suspicious intentions are kept out of the industry. AGA also proposed to make sure that every US online poker player should cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and keep cheaters and minors from playing. Minors and cheaters should be prohibited from accessing the licensed poker sites. Also, in order to make sure that the US players are having fun in a fair and safe environment, the software used in the games in the licensed online poker sites should be regularly tested for quality. Of course, you can?t deny the fact that there are actually people who develop gambling addictions when playing these sorts of games. The AGA proposes that these operator sites should include content that will help educate these players in controlling their urges. Of course, the AGA also wants to deal with money laundering issues and it encourages the government to strictly crack down on all offenders.

AGA?s Video

The American Gambling Association has released a video comparing the past and present state of poker and that it did not change as it is lawless as it was during the wild west. Of course, today, things are getting worse as outsiders are profiting from gullible US online poker players. American Gambling Association president and CEO Frank Fahrenkopf stated that ?If online poker is legalized in the US, implementation of the principles of the Code of Conduct will ensure that American Consumers are playing online poker in a fair and secure environment provided by a responsible operator.? Some people are now saying that online poker does indeed have a brighter future as more and more establishments and figures support its legalization.

Why You Should Research Before Hiring A Waterproofing Contractor

Basement waterproofing is one of the most popular methods used to protect a home's structure from damage due to an overabundance of water. There are various waterproofing methods that are used to help prevent water damage to your home. If your foundation is in need of repair, then it is recommended that you have it waterproofed as well at the time of the repair. There are many foundation repair experts who also specialize in waterproofing foundations and basement walls. If you have a reocurring foundation problem, then there's a good chance that the issues are a result of water damage. Having your home's structure water proofed is absolutely necessary to help ensure that it will last in good condition for many years to come. Before hiring a waterproofing contractor, you should look into whether or not they are also foundation repair specialists. As stated before, it is necessary to have your foundation repaired first before it can be waterproofed. Also, only use waterproofing contractors who use the best, most well-regarded waterproofing products. There are a lot of cheap products out there that may mask water damage issues, but only for a short time. Steer clear of businsses who use such things. A little research should help you to determine what products are the most popular as well as the most effective. After you have decided upon which business you would like to use, they will provide you with an estimate of how much they believe it will cost to repair your foundation as well as water proof it. The cost should include all labor fees as well as the cost for any extra materials that may be needed. A good company should not pressure a consumer into choosing them without providing a quote for the project. If you live in a very humid and rainy area, then it is highly advisable that you protect your home with professional waterproofing! Do not attempt to waterproof your home on your home because there is a good chance that you may disturb your yard, garden, terrace, patio, driveway, etc. Save yourself the time and energy by letting the professionals provide you with a waterproofing system which will help to block all channels through which water enters the foundation walls of your home. There are numerous ways that water can be blocked from entering the foundation. Some solutions include using the following: Sump pump Crawl space encapsulation Floor space vapor barrier Basement waterproofing Some of the major benefits of hiring waterproofing contractors for foundation repairs and wet basements are as follows: 1. Protection of the home's structure. 2. Hinderence in the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. 3.An increase in the value of the property. 4.Protection for your property with a structurally sound foundation. 5.Providing a clean, dry environment for you and your family. Generally speaking, waterproofing is a protective method by which water attempting to penetrate a foundation is blocked and directed to somewhere else. The whole process takes time, but if you choose a waterproofing contractor who also serves as a foundation repair expert, you will save a lot of time and take care of a lot of preventative mesaures by having your home waterproofed at the time of your repairs. Always remember that waterproofing your home's structure will help it to last for many years to come for your family!

Watch a Race Course DVD While Treadmilling to Simulate Running Outside [Exercise]

Watch a Race Course DVD While Treadmilling to Simulate Running OutsideBeing able to watch TV or listen to music while you run is one of the major benefits of running on a treadmill. But for those of you who would rather run outside, but can't due to weather or health reasons, you can actually use race course DVDs to simulate the experience.

Outside Interactive has five DVDs, which include Central Park, the Charles River, a 10K course and the Boston Marathon, and are pre-paced, with proper mile markers. You can also change your treadmill's incline and speed to match what the real-life course is doing, but since the DVDs don't communicate with your machine, you have to do it manually.

They have a Virtual Runner series that's going to debut this month, but they're not available for purchase yet. And if you're a biker, rather than a runner, there's a similar Google Street View option for stationary bikes.

Bionic owners peeved by high-pitched whine, source of the sound still a mystery

Bionic Headphone Jack
Reports have been trickling in for a few days now that Droid Bionic owners were hearing a high-pitched whine when playing media back through headphones. Well, it looks like it's safe to say it's a serious issue. The Motorola support forums are rife with tales of a piercing background tone and loud clicks as the audio hardware fires up and shuts down. In fact, you can find recorded examples of the sounds at the source link. So far it's unclear if the issue is hardware or software related, and Motorola hasn't had much to say about it just yet. We're sure they'll move relatively quickly to address the problem though, before Verizon stores are flooded with returned handsets.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
