8 Pink Products Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness (That Won't ...

Ashley Reed/Wikimedia/Public Domain

It happens every October -- the tsunami of pink washes across the western world. Everyday items debut in limited edition models blushing shades of Pepto Bismol, pink trinkets multiply like tribbles, the world?s landmarks become awash in rose lights, and pink ribbons dominate the logo landscape like an invasive species.

Welcome to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

While dedicating an entire month to breast cancer awareness is clearly an act to be applauded -- and we do, whole-heartedly -- it hasn?t all been a bed of healthy roses.

The most notable entity behind Pink October is the non-profit foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure (Komen). Komen raises a load of money (to the tune of $35 million a year) from its many dozens of cause marketing partnerships, which allows corporations to use the pink ribbon and Komen branding to promote their wares in return for compensation to the foundation.

Which would be great if there hadn?t been so many deeply questionable partnerships made and products promoted in the name of pink.

Like, the nifty Smith and Wesson M&P9 JG pistol engraved with the Awareness Ribbon and packaged with pink grip inserts -- packing for the cure? Or the Promise Me perfume, replete with potentially carcinogenic ingredients. Or the pink-ribboned Vodka for Her. (We'll just assume they didn't get the memo listing the studies that link alcohol consumption and breast cancer.) And then there was the KFC Buckets for the Cure campaign. Yes, tortured chickens and obesity-inducing junk food for the cure!

But pink Grinches we are not, so as the month is drawing to a close we thought we?d take a look at some of the products from the all-things-pink category of goods that are actually pretty great for their non-toxic clean bills of health. Here are eight we found that get our green stamp of pink approval.

1. Acure Organics Argan Oil

? Acure Organics

This family owned and operated company was founded on deeply sustainable principles and makes super-duper fair-trade, natural and certified organic personal care products -- everything from hair care to skin, from lips to body. All products are free from animal testing, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, harmful preservatives and artificial colors. And true to the company's name, they work towards a cure: For each Argan Oil and Oil Control Day Cream they sell, they donate $1 to Bright Pink, as well as donating 5 percent to provide free mammograms to at-risk women. (Acure Organics Argan Oil, $14.99)

2. Healing Cooler

? Healing Cooler

All-organic, fresh-pressed juice delivery company extraordinaire Healing Cooler will donate 25 percent of their October proceeds to the Young Survival Coalition. Send a cooler of healthy juices instead of flowers or an insipid fruit basket, and heal for the cure! (Healing Cooler, $60)

3. Suki Skincare

? Suki Skincare

The powers that be at Suki Skincare aren't churning out loads of special edition products for the month, rather they are donating 100 percent of the proceeds from all sukiskincare.com purchases made during October to Breast Cancer Action. So, you have your choice of any product from their site; and all of those products use ingredients that are fair trade, staunchly cruelty-free, organic, biodynamic and local whenever possible, always considering fuel emissions and travel distances. Best eco practices ensue throughout the company. (Many lovely products, prices vary.)

4. Save Hooters Organic T-Shirt

? cafepress

This one is kind of a workaround since its purchase doesn't support any charity specifically. But say maybe you made a direct donation to a charity without benefit of the swag, and you still want to show your support? This "Save Hooters" T-shirt made from organic cotton fills the bill with two messages in one -- find a cure, and save the owls. Hoot, hoot! (Hooters Organic T, $27.00)

5. Method Designed for Good Gel Hand Soap

? Method

The company that has made non-toxic cleaning products mainstream is offering a special edition non-toxic and biodegradable hand soap in two scents to show their support for breast cancer awareness. They will also be donating $10,000 to four community-based charities nominated and voted on by their online community in their October Facebook challenge. Designed for Good Soap, $3.99)

6. The North Face Quarter Zip Fleece Pullover

? The North Face

The North Face has teamed up with Boarding For Breast Cancer, a non-profit, education awareness foundation for to create this cozy fleece pullover, as evidenced by the pink ribbon embroidered at the left sleeve. The bundle of cuddliness contains at least 90 percent environmentally responsible bluesign? approved fabric. (Women's Pink Ribbon Glacier Zip, $55)

7. EOS Breast Cancer Awareness Lip Balm & Body Lotion Set

? eos

Unlike so many of the petroleum-based lip and skin soothers, Eos products are 95 percent organic, 100 percent natural, and paraben and petrolatum free. Plus they are packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, shea butter and jojoba oil. (Eos Lip Balm & Body Lotion Set, $6.99)

8. Tami's Ring

? JoLovesJewelry

If you're unsure about how much of your purchase is really going to end up fighting breast cancer, here is an alternative, and touching, way to help. Etsy shop JoLovesJewelry is making these lovely handmade silver an rose quartz rings, for which all proceeds will go to help Tami, the the daughter of a friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Kind of the antidote to the media blitz of "Pinktober" ... just a woman hoping to make a difference by creating something to help a friend. (Tami's Ring, $34)

(AP) ? The storm that was Sandy isn't done just yet.

After lashing coastal cities and inundating parts of New York City with 13 feet of water, the core of the hybrid storm is beginning a long slog across Pennsylvania and upstate New York, with its effects spreading as far west as Wisconsin and Illinois.

The big storm, which has caused wind warnings from Chicago to Maine and Canada to Florida, will continue to be a problem for a couple more days with heavy rainfall, snow and local flooding.

"This is going to be an event that for a period of time is going to alter the way we do things," Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said Monday, warning residents of his state they would not escape with just a glancing blow.

By midnight, what's left of Sandy was near Philadelphia and was forecast to spend most of Tuesday heading across Pennsylvania and then take a sharp turn Wednesday into western New York, weakening as it moved, said Daniel Brown, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center.

The once-tropical system has merged with a wintry cold front and is likely to produce heavy rain in the East for the next two or three days ? adding up to more flooding, Brown said.

Coastal storm surge will likely continue to be elevated Tuesday, especially with morning high tides, but they may be at levels a foot to a couple of feet less than Monday night's peak, Brown said. On the coast, gale-force winds will continue and subside eventually Tuesday evening, but inland they should subside by midday.

In parts of the mid-Atlantic region, particulary higher elevations, several more inches of snow was predicted Tuesday in addition to what fell the night before.

On the western shore of Lake Michigan, large waves were a concern. The Village of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., urged residents to evacuate in anticipation of waves as high as 18 feet. In Chicago, emergency officials asked residents and utility crews to be prepared for winds forecast at 50 mph and waves as high as 25 feet.

In upstate New York, automated calls warned about 13,000 Rochester-area residents who live near Lake Ontario to watch out for waves of 8 to 10 feet overnight. Emergency officials in neighboring Wayne County also suggested that shoreline homeowners evacuate.

The National Weather Service warned of hurricane-force winds with gusts up to 80 mph in New York City and surrounding counties until Tuesday evening.

Dow, S&P rise after reopening, volume low

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks mostly rose on Wednesday in the first trading session since a massive storm in the Northeast forced the first weather-related two-day market closure since 1888.

Trading was expected to be volatile with volume light as many market participants remained unable to get to their offices or work from home given power outages and public transit issues across the region.

"Liquidity remains very light in equities as there are a lot of empty seats on the Street," said Dave Lutz, a Baltimore-based trader with Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. "We're also seeing some outsized moves."

Ford Motor Co rallied 5 percent to $10.83 as the most-traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange after reporting strong results during the market closure. Home Depot climbed 2.4 percent to $61.51 as people bought supplies to repair storm damage.

Still, predictions that exchanges would not be able to handle pent-up trading demand appeared to be unfounded. NYSE Euronext, which operates the New York Stock Exchange, said all its cash equity markets were operating normally and that it expected a normal close.

"I think a lot of people were overly worried after the Facebook initial public offering and the Knight trading glitch, but so far things are going smoothly," said Scott Freeze, president of Street One Financial in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 14.71 points, or 0.11 percent, at 13,121.92. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.94 points, or 0.07 percent, at 1,411.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index was unchanged at .00.

Weakness in Apple Inc, which slumped 2 percent to $591.69, weighed on the Nasdaq. The company announced management changes during the market closure. Facebook was down 2.6 percent to $21.36 as a lockup ended and the company allowed employees to start selling some stock.

Industrial stocks were the strongest on the day, rising 0.8 percent as investors bet the group would see additional demand from rebuilding efforts after the storm. The KBW Insurance sector rose 0.1 percent.

Ford posted a third-quarter profit that trounced analysts' forecasts on Tuesday, driven by higher vehicle prices and record profit margins of 12 percent in North America.

General Motors reported earnings on Wednesday that beat expectations, sending its shares up 6.3 percent to $24.75.

Walt Disney Co agreed to buy filmmaker George Lucas's Lucas film Ltd and its "Star Wars" franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock, a blockbuster deal that includes the surprise promise of a new film in the series in 2015. Disney, a Dow component, fell 1.4 percent to $49.40.

3 Orioles win Gold Gloves; 9 1st-timers, not Trout

J.J. Hardy thought he'd hit a home run, only to be robbed when Mike Trout made one of the most sensational grabs of the season.

On Tuesday night, Hardy caught a break.

The Baltimore shortstop won a Gold Glove, putting him among a group of nine players honored for the first time for their fielding excellence.

"It means a lot to me," Hardy said. "It's definitely an award I always hoped to get and never really expected to get. I'm surprised and honored at the same time."

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen, San Diego third baseman Chase Headley and Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick also were first-time selections.

"I'm just happy I can pull it out for them and get the A's name even more out there," Reddick said. "It's a huge honor, I'm always taking pride in both sides of my game and trying to be a complete player. You never know what one play, whether the first or the ninth inning, is going to win a ballgame. That's what my mother and father taught me."

The Orioles were the only team with three winners. Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones and catcher Matt Wieters were second-time choices, joining Hardy for the awards chosen by major league managers and coaches and presented by Rawlings.

Trout, the Angels rookie who spent the year climbing walls to take away potential homers, was not picked. Among his best catches came against Hardy at Camden Yards in June.

The San Francisco Giants, fresh off winning a World Series in which they excelled with their gloves, did not have a Gold Glover.

These were the first major awards presented during the offseason, and the MVPs, Cy Youngs and others will come in mid-November. Gold Gloves always seem to raise a ruckus, with many claiming the prizes ? actual gloves colored gold ? don't define the most deserving fielders.

Hardy led the AL in fielding percentage, making only six errors in 158 games. Others relying on more advanced metrics and insist Seattle's Brendan Ryan was the best shortstop ? then again, even though awards are strictly for fielding, players who don't produce at the plate often get bypassed, and Ryan hit a weak .194. Hardy hit 22 home runs.

"I've always hoped but I never expected it," Hardy said. "It's definitely an award I've seen a lot of shortstops get that are really flashy and kind of catch the eye of a lot of people. I don't look at myself that way. I kind of look at myself as just trying to be consistent and steady. I never felt like people noticed."

Wieters, meanwhile, was chosen despite leading AL catchers with 10 errors. He was recognized for the many things he does well ? he threw out 39 percent of would-be basestealers and rarely let pitches get past him.

Strong-armed St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina won for the fifth straight year and Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira added his fifth award. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre, Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins and Miami pitcher Mark Buehrle became four-time winners.

Buehrle won three times with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Marlins last winter.

"With a whole new group of managers voting for you, it wasn't like it was handed to you," Buehrle said. "The Gold Glove gets to be, 'He won it last year, give it to him again.' This one means a lot, because switching leagues, it was different managers voting on it. I had to do my job to earn it."

The other first-time winners in the National League were Washington first baseman Adam LaRoche, Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney and Atlanta right fielder Jason Heyward.

"I'm extremely thrilled," Barney said. "It's something you came into the season working toward, but it's not something that I thought the results would be there as quickly as they were. I'm extremely happy about it. There's a lot of good competition out there, obviously, and I'm really surprised that ended up happening for me. So it's an exciting night for me."

In the AL, pitchers Jake Peavy of the White Sox and Jeremy Hellickson shared the honor as first-time winners. This was only the third time since the Gold Gloves were first presented in 1957 that there was a tie ? there were four NL outfielders in 2007 and four AL outfielders in 1985.

Also winning this year: Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon and Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Several players were rewarded for their wins.

Beltre received a $100,000 bonus and Hardy got $75,000, Gordon, LaRoche, Molina, Peavy and Rollins each added $50,000; Gonzalez, Jones and McCutchen $25,000 apiece.

In addition, Gordon's salaries for 2014 and 2015 increase by $250,000 a year to $10.25 million and $12.75 million. His 2016 player option also rises by $250,000 to $12.75 million.

da:ns Fest 2012! Notion: Dance Fiction! Oppa Frankenstein! ? For ...

Joavien Ng performs in Choy Ka Fai's Notion: Dance Fiction. Photo courtesy of Yi-Chun Wu/The Esplanade.

Earlier this afternoon, Choy Ka Fai stuck some pads on my right arm and left cheek and let rip a few thousand volts of electricity.

I?m exaggerating of course. It was only a slight electrical jolt, but it was enough to make my arm contort involuntarily. And my face is still twitching ever so slightly. I hope the lady in the bus didn?t think I was coming on to her.

But at least I can say that for less than a minute, I became a butoh artist. Sorta. Kinda.

What if you can digitally map out, codify and archive dance movements? And what if, with a tweak of a knob or a press of a button, you can access and enact it?

That?s the premise behind Notion: Dance Fiction, Choy?s fascinating lecture performance that?s part of an ongoing project about muscle memory.

It?s all very Matrix-y. Plug in and voila! Instant Moonwalk.

Armed with his laptops, consoles and this afternoon?s collaborator, choreographer Joavien Ng, Choy presents the preliminary results of this unusual research.

In NDF, he reduces dance to, literally, a physiological tic, a muscle contraction brought about by electroshock. He aligns it to scientific developments stretching all the way back to the 1700s and to forays in contemporary art from artists like Stelarc and Daito Manabe.

Creating a programme that allows him to convert video images of dance pieces into electrical impulses, he sticks aforementioned pads unto his body and ?does? butoh artist Tatsumi Hijikata?s Summer Storm.

And then comes the fun part. He gets Ng to do the same thing. Using samples from his database of performances by contemporary dance choreographers, which are also projected onscreen, Ng does an Yvonne Rainer, a Vaslav Nijinsky, an Isadora Duncan, a Lin Hwai-Min, and even one of her earlier pieces.

Insider quips abound. A technical glitch during her Akram Khan moment sees her ?looped? (?The file is corrupted,? says Choy. A joke or a jibe?). She does a Jerome Bel?which basically entails doing nothing.

And then Choy complicates things, cutting and pasting, combining pieces: Rainer meets Pichet Klunchun, a Rainer, Klunchun and Merce Cunningham hybrid. A Frankenstein of dance.

Human agency is erased as dance becomes patterns filtered through machines. For some, the possibility is an ethical and artistic nightmare (what happens to genius? To chance?) For others, it?s a glimpse at a gamechanging breakthrough (I can become the next Messi! We can all become the next Messi!)

It?s a lovely debate to have, and indeed, a number of folks during the post-show discussion brought up questions having to do with one or the other.

But there?s something else going on here. If the title isn?t enough of a giveaway, the contrast between the crudeness and jerkiness of Choy?s earlier demonstrations and Ng?s rather fluid reenactments of some complicated movements should be enough of a hint.

You don?t have to try it out to see that right now, this proposition is really one for the future, but since I did, I?d have to point out that it can get pretty uncomfortable. Ng would have to be a masochist to go through all that. Heck, I don?t think the body?s even prepared for such abuse.

And that?s where the coolness of the piece really lies?that the two?have deadpanned their way through NDF, talking about and discussing muscle memory and all that scientific stuff, pushing a case for it, while at the same time interrogating it.

Seen in that light, NDF debunks its own arguments and proves its exact reverse: in the end, Ng combines all these different portions into one piece, without any outside assistance.

And through it all, we, the audience, are not so much deceived as made complicit by our very act of viewing in this continuous shuffling between fact and fiction.

While there is a twist to the proceedings, NDF is far from being a ?punchline? work. When it quotes the Rainer piece ?The Mind Is A Muscle?, you understand it not only in relation to the debate about where the art of dance really comes from, but also in relation to you sitting there and shaping your own cognitive experience of the show. Inasmuch as Choy and Ng are piecing together these mini-choreographies, aided by technology or otherwise, you are likewise doing the same thing.

Shocking, isn?t it?
