Finland has dispatched its communications minister to India in a bid to resolve the tax evasion probe faced by one of the country's largest companies, Nokia.
In a Bloomberg report Thursday, the Finnish government said its Minister for Communications Krista Kiuru has made the trip to India and met with her local counterpart Kapil Sibal to discuss ways to resolve the issue. On her part, Kiuru said Finland's relationship with India is good and the talks took place "in candid and good spirit", adding the tax issue can be solved.
Last week, Indian tax officials visited Nokia's manufacturing plant in the city of Chennai but gave no reason for their appearance. A Nokia spokesperson confirmed the visit and said it is cooperating fully to ensure the authorities had the necessary information to help with their inquiries.
Chennai's chief income tax commissioner S. Senthamarai Kannan later told reporters that officials had conducted a "survey" of Nokia's factory after it is suspected of tax evasion to the tune of INR 30 billion (US$545 million).
India is Nokia's second-largest market and the Chennai factory produces over 20 different models for the Finnish phonemaker.
