Nursing Home Air Conditioner Shuts Down During Heat Wave

As we reach the brunt of the summer months, the temperatures are reaching an all time high and can become very dangerous for elderly individuals if they aren?t properly protected. In one nursing home, fifty-six residents in a nursing home were forced to evacuate because of a lack of air conditioning.

The inside of the nursing home building that is more than 35-years-old had temperatures so high that it became unfit for the residents who lived there. The residents were taken to other facilities or allowed to stay with family member until the issue with the air conditioning was resolved. The nursing home employee?s tries to keep the residents cool by having activities in the dining room, which is air conditioning and having twenty-four individual air-conditioning units brought in, but state officials still decided to evacuate the building. The Department of Public Health stated that the temperature was not an acceptable range to house all the residents and said that if the problem was fixed the facility would be reevaluated. The nursing home improvements will cost more than $50,000.

High temperatures can affect the elderly?s health in many negative ways. Dehydration, exhaustion can affect the already pre-existing medical problems the elderly already have. It?s important to investigate the building your elderly one is planning to stay at and ask about their plans for maintenance in case of an instance like this one.
