Mid-TN Today: Mountain Bike Trail Opening at Old Hickory Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is proud to announce the grand opening celebration of the nearly eight mile long Shutes Branch Mountain Bike Trail at Old Hickory Lake 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov.3, 2012.

All outdoor enthusiasts are invited to the trailhead, located within the old U.S. Army Corps of Engineers? Shutes Branch Campground, to participate in the ceremony?s activities that will include acknowledgements, a ribbon cutting, the first official bike ride, led by members of the Friends of Shutes Branch, and reception.

The Friends of Shutes Branch, a mountain biking interest group, is a cooperative partner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Old Hickory Lake. Since 2008, the group has been responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the 7.9 mile Shute Branch Mountain Bike Trail.

Old Hickory Lake Resource Manager Crystal Tingle said, "This has been an amazing undertaking for a volunteer group and the trail is already getting a lot of use. We are looking forward to the entire community knowing the trail is complete and ready for their recreation enjoyment."

To reach the Shutes Branch Mountain Bike Trail (from Nashville, Tenn.) take Highway 70/Hermitage Ave southeast out of downtown Nashville. Continue onto Lebanon Pike for 10.3 miles. Turn left onto Andrew Jackson Parkway and drive 0.7 miles. Continue straight for 2.5 miles on Saundersville Road. Turn right onto Needmore Road and drive 0.2 miles. Turn left onto Shutes Branch Road and drive 0.1 miles. The trailhead trail parking area is located at the top of hill on the left. The parking area lies at 36 degrees 14.47 minutes north latitude and 86 degrees 34.03 west longitude.
